Eric Stone Campaign
June 1
The Gathering :
Eric Stone , Alchemist and executor of Jason Stones estate, seeks help and gathers the adventures.
-
Mr. Stone stops by Monet’s easel to ask if the struggling artist (and junior swordsman), can stop by this evening to discuss business.
- Returning from the Cogs, after a long day’s work at the IronBender forge, Bjorn receives a message from his patron, Eric Stone. Tad, a young street urchin, delivers the small envelope, inside a note requesting the large fighters presence this evening at Mr Stones shop in the Red Stone district.
- A nameless cleric in the service of Dul Dorath (Strength and Valor?) is asked by Father Frand Lorson if he can help one of Lorson’s friends. Mr. Stone has need of a warrior cleric.
With the group gathered in Mr. Stones shop, in upper Sharns RedStone district, he explains the situation.
Five weeks ago Mr. Stone's younger brother Jason died from a sudden illness, 'Filth Fever' he says. Mr. Stone explains that his brother, a member of the Circle of Wizards, had spent the last 20 years of his life researching the Marks and was looking forward to publishing a definitive book on the subject. In the last few weeks before Jason fell ill, he was excited about a new set of murals he had discovered. He was in the process of deciphering the magic writing on the murals when the feaver struck. Mr. Stone says that Jason was convinced that the information on the murals would provide invaluable knowledge on the 26 marks and even on the Great Prophecy. His brother was convinced that these translations would provide him with the key information he needed to complete his book. With Jason's death the book will remain incomplete unless Mr. Stone can take up the task.
Mr Stone would like to see the book completed. It is the least he can do to honor the memory of his departed brother. While going through his brothers estate papers he found a draft manuscript for the book and a set of documents indicating that Jason had, just last year, “purchased” a row of shops in the lower Callistin district. Callistin is part of a very old section of lower Sharn that is now all but abandoned; it is in a section of the city with no law enforcement and is inhabited by goblinoids and the desperately poor. Stone thinks these shops are where the murals were discovered and would like access to the shops for a few weeks so that he can complete the translation his brother was working on.
The problem that he has asked the group to help with is getting access to the shops. When Mr. Stone visited the shops, just under two weeks ago, he was accosted by a thug calling himself the owner of 'dis section of da street'. Tavin, the thug wanted cash to allow him access to the shops. Stone does not have a problem paying for access to the shops but he is not sure Tavin actually has control of the streets and that paying him would in fact give him safe access. Stone knows that multiple thieves' guilds are always battling for control of the streets below and wants to be certain that if he is paying someone to provide protection that they will actually provide the safe access he needs and that the price will not suddenly go up some dark night.
Stone asks the group to go down to the shops and find out who's running the area and if possible setup an arrangement for secure access to the shops. The group agrees to help. He gives them a key to the shops and 100GP for expenses. They’ll be paid 100 GP each to secure safe access to the shops. Mr. Stone recommends that the group starts by meeting with Vendry at his tavern in the lower Bazaar section of the city. They depart that evening, with Tad in tow. When they get to the tavern they decide that seeking additional knowledge of the situation is of no value, instead they enlist the assistance of Tammy, a local urchin, who leads them to a set of stairs down into Calistin.
The weather up above is wet and windy, but down in Calistin the air is warm and damp, streams of water and refuse fill the gutters and roll down the sides of the buildings. From here there are only a few views up the sides of towers to the lights and bustling city above. Tammy leads the group past the last City Watch post, a fortified bunker of a building, then past the few shops and residences that are open and to a set of wide stairs that will lead to lower Calistin. When the group descends the long stairs they encounter a group of Goblins that claim to own the stairs. Salik, the goblin leader requests on a toll of 3GP. When the group threatens the small creatures, Salik and his friends indicate that they can pass this time, but be prepared to pay a toll when you head back up.
Death of Tavin of the Tyrants:
Safely in Lower Calestin and beyond the reach of the local law the group soldiers on, past a few derelicts and what appear to be abandoned shops. This part of the city sure is not in the brochures’ you are below the slums; Goblins, humans an occasional dwarf and gnome wander past. Moving on the group is fairly sure they are being followed. As the group approaches the row of shops that Stone wants secured they disturb a gathering of men enjoying fire roasted rat or some other meat. The men depart to the shadows to ask what the adventures want. When Bjorn indicates that they are here to look at the shops, one of the indicate that they best not do that without Tavin’s permission first. The adventures tell the man to go get Tavin if he wants, and begins investigating the boarded-up shops.
As Bjorn is working to free up one of the doors, he hears things bigger then rats scurrying about. Before anything is opened up, Tavin shows up with three friends. Tavin indicates that they are in Tyrant territory and that the shops are his. Negotiations for access to the shops leads nowhere, Tavin wants 20GP just to see inside, and more for regular access. Bjorn indicates that Tavin and his men are puny and are in no position to demand anything, and anyways, what are you going to do to stop us. Tavin’s boys move in. The fight is brief but deadly, Monet and the priest are badly wounded before Bjorn kills the last of the street thugs. When the group searches the bodies they notice that Taven was not even human, he was a changeling.
The group collects about 60 Gold from the bodies. The priest calls on the divine magic of the god of strength to heal everyone then prepares to force open the shops. Tadd and Tammy are nowhere to be seen..
A Kobald nest disturbed:
With the middle door open the group finds a small open area with iron gates to either side, a metal door ahead and a handful of kobolds prepared to defend their nest. As the group pushes their way inside the kobolds retreat behind the bars and continue to pelt the group with stones and trash. Monet and the Bjorn approach the iron door as the nameless priest shoots the kobolds with his practice bolts. (First time on the job, should have remembered to bring the sharp ones). At the door they attempt to use the key given them by Mr Stone, but with all the rocks and trash distracting them they have no luck. With frustration mounting Monet goes berserk, he charges the kobolds who think they are safe behind their iron gate. To everyone’s surprise the gate comes crashing down. The hornets nest has well and truly been whacked. Kobolds start pouring out of a small hole in the wall, the chanting of some foul incantation to one of the dark six can be heard, more kobolds begin to deploy behind the other gate. Rocks everywhere, Bjorn calls a retreat and runs to the main door. The party retreats under fire, a flaming red scimitar from a kobald shaman helps convince the group to stay out.
Very badly wounded the group thinks about returning past the goblins and his friends. Passing this option up they head further down the dark street, looking for a safe place to hide. Checking doors they hear the now familiar scurrying of kobolds, Bjorn asks “Is this whole floor infested?” Finding a trash heap and the remains of a large crate the group hunkers down for the night.

Asleep in a pile of garbage:
While hiding the adventures hear a group of men discussing what happened in front of the shops. Apparently the Tyrants are not happy; they send more men into the area. Latter they can be heard pulling back.
Near morning an abomination smells the spilt blood and bandaged wounds of the adventures and climbs over the mound to investigate, “blood, I need blood” comes the raspy voice of what the priest knows to be an un-living creature as it jumps on Monet. Bjorn heroically grabs the thing and hurls it into the street. It departs, and none of the locals investigate what lives in the trash heap.
With the divine aid of Dul Dorath the group is healed enough to try and leave. They decide to head back the way they came. Bjorn sets the pace jogging down the street with shield up and weapon ready. When they reach the shops they notice a bugbear and some goblins have setup. As they approach the bugbear steps into the street, Bjorn picks up the pace and flattens the surprised goblinoid. They keep running. When they approach the base of the stairs up to lower Calistin, Bjorn repeats his earlier overrun, but this time on a much smaller goblin. With arrows ricocheting off rocks the group climbs the stairs and bulls their way past the City Watch station to safety.
Safe at Vendry’s and a new ‘friend’:
The three bloody and filth covered adventures pile into Vendry’s tavern and plan on getting a bath and good days rest but before the group can go and rest Tad shows up. Tad explains that he has been befriended by a Halfling, Bosin. He says that Bosin would like to chat and leads the group over to a table with beer and food for the group just arriving. Bosin explains that they are currently in Borimer Clan territory and that he is a representative. He explains that if the group wants to continue fighting the gangs in the Lower Calistin and use Ventry’s tavern as a safe house then they will need offer some compensation to the Clan. 3GP for the week should cover everything. Bjorn is happy to pay, as he sees a service being returned for his money.

Gangs of Sharn:
A chat with Bosin, a representative of the Borimer Clan(Mostly Halflings), reveals that the party has disrupted the balance of power on the streets below. “The Borimer Clan offers protection for the local shops, and is involved in other difficult business that the City Watch may frown on, but we are easily the most professional and honorable of business men.” The Dask, Goblins and monsters, now have more control in the area that the group is interested. Bosin explains that the Dask are drug runners and violent thugs. He suspects that any money paid to the Dask would not suffice in the long run. They would likely ask for more and more. Bosin explains that The Tyrants specialize in prostitution, common theft and forgery. “Many of them are shifters, and I doubt they will be quick to forgive you killing one of their own.” When asked if the Borimer clan is interested in controlling that section of lower Calistin, Bosin says “Not interested, Nothing of value I can see in that area, just some streets and lots of trouble, we’ll be happy to offer you protection here in upper Calistin, but down there you’ll be on your own.” Bosin mentions a fourth gang, the House Tarkhanin, may have an interest. House Tarkhanin is a group of shifters with unknown goals. The clan tried to work with them a while back but things did not work out. Bosin says, “The House is an odd group, I don’t know what motivates them, but they are always interested in extending their control of territory in the old city”. Bosin offers to setup a meeting with a House representative, for a small 3GP fee. The party agrees.

A meeting with House Tarkhanin:
The adventures head up to the sunny top side of the city with Tad guiding them. Tad leads them over to the Crystal Mirror on the north side of town. There they enter a fine restaurant for a lunch meeting with Cherin of the House Tarkhanin. Cherin is initially interested in the opportunity to take more territory, but is concerned that killing a bunch of Dask and Tyrants may create a much bigger gangland war. She is looking for something more then just a few new blocks. “What are you trying to do?” Monet and Bjorn answer that they are looking to get short term access to a row of shops. When she asks “For what?” the group remains quiet. Once it is clear that the group will not offer to pay for help from the House and that they will not cut the House in on whatever the group is looking for she leaves.

Reporting in to Mr Stone:
The group decides to report back into Mr. Stone with a plan to secure access to the shops. Bjorn says “We’ll hire a bunch of the Death Watch guild (Local Sharn mercenaries) and take over the streets ourselves” Mr. Stone is appalled at the idea of becoming a gang leader and running the streets of lower Sharn has never been one of his goals in life. Besides at 10GP each for the Death Watch he would rather not pay the price. “What other options are available?”, he asks. “Work with the Tyrants? Work with the Dask?” When Mr. Stone is told that the group contacted House Tarkhanin he is surprised and says “We should not work with them. They are interested in the War of the Mark and that is what my brother was researching. It would be best to keep them out of the picture. I don’t know what they are trying to do but the last leader of the rebels in the war was Lord Tarkhanin.” Stone concludes the meeting, saying that he will “find some additional help” and asks everyone to meet at his shop tomorrow.
